Apex's cross-connection rules, updated June 11, 2024, require lawn irrigation to use a reduced pressure (RP) assembly that a Town-registered certified tester checks at installation and every year. Results go into AquaResource within 10 days, and a failed assembly has 10 days to be repaired. Call the number on this page to be connected with a local plumber in Apex.

Apex's program and what it means at home
Apex Water Resources runs its own distribution system, with water from Jordan Lake treated at the plant Apex co-owns with Cary. The Town's Cross Connection Control rules (Section 620, effective June 11, 2024) are specific. Every testable assembly is tested at installation and then annually by a certified tester registered with the Town. For lawn irrigation, only an RP assembly is acceptable, and it has to sit at least 12 inches above grade somewhere between the meter and the first sprinkler head. Running irrigation off a hose bibb isn't allowed.
Lots platted after July 1, 2009 also need a separate irrigation meter. Since Apex housing is very new, with a median build year of 2008, most neighborhoods here have that dedicated meter and an RP standing in a bed near the street.
Two deadlines matter. Test reports must be entered into the AquaResource system within 10 days of the test, and a failed assembly must be repaired within 10 days. The Town owns the public side of the service line; the property owner owns the private side, including the RP.

Signs you need a plumber
- The yearly test reminder for your RP has arrived
- Your tester reported a fail and the 10-day repair clock is running
- The RP is spitting water from its relief port when sprinklers run
- A winter freeze cracked the body or a test cock
- You're adding irrigation and need the assembly installed to Town spec
Seasonal timing
An above-ground RP is exposed, so Apex freezes take a toll. Shut the irrigation supply and drain the assembly before the first hard cold, and consider an insulated cover. Book the annual test early in the season so a failure doesn't collide with summer watering, and if a repair is needed, schedule it right away to stay inside the 10-day window.
