About Fremont
Fremont sits in the northern part of Wayne County, about 41 miles east-southeast of Raleigh in a straight line and a short drive north of Goldsboro. The town was called Nahunta until it was renamed Fremont in 1869. US 117 and NC 222 cross here, with I-795 nearby at NC 222. The Aycock Birthplace and the Barnes-Hooks Farm are both local landmarks. The town has been shrinking slowly, from a peak of 1,736 residents in 1980 to about 1,200 at the 2020 Census.
The housing is old, and that shapes the work
Fremont's homes skew older than almost anywhere else in this region. The median house was built in 1967, about two-thirds were built before 1980, and over 22% were built in 1939 or earlier. In a house that age, you can find several generations of plumbing under one roof:
- Galvanized steel supply lines that narrow from the inside and lower pressure
- Cast iron drain pipe that cracks or scales over time
- Later copper or plastic repairs spliced into the original system
- Water heaters and fixtures added long after the house was built
A plumber looking at one leak in an older Fremont home will often check the condition of the surrounding pipe too, since it may be the same age.
Water service
The Town of Fremont runs a small public water system that uses groundwater, and neighboring Pikeville lists Fremont as a backup supplier of its well water. Wayne Water Districts also serves parts of the Fremont area. If you're not sure which system serves your address, your water bill or Town Hall will tell you, and it's useful for the plumber to know before a visit. For questions about water quality, ask the Town for its annual report.
For sewer questions, including whether a backup is in a Town line or your own, contact Town Hall.
Permits
Wayne County Inspections issues building, plumbing and mechanical permits across the county except in Goldsboro and Mount Olive, so it would normally cover Fremont. The Town also requires its own zoning permit for new homes, additions and accessory buildings. A routine repair usually won't involve either office, but a water heater replacement or repipe may need a permit, and your plumber can sort that out.
Gas
Wayne County falls in Piedmont Natural Gas territory, with availability varying by street. If you smell gas, leave the house, then call 911 or Piedmont at 800-752-7504 from outside.
Fremont versus Raleigh
A typical Raleigh house is on a large city system and is far more likely to be newer. In Fremont the system is small, the housing is old, and permits run through the county. When you call, describe the problem and the age of the home. You'll be connected with an independent local plumber who serves Fremont.
