Plumbing services in Knightdale

Just across the line from Raleigh

Knightdale is the closest of the eastern Wake towns, about 8 miles east of the State Capitol in a straight line. I-87/US 64, US 264 and I-540 all pass through or along it, and Knightdale Boulevard (US 64 Business) carries most of the local traffic. The town was incorporated in 1927 around a small railroad-era downtown and counted 19,435 people in 2020. Neighborhoods like Knightdale Station, Mingo Creek and Planter's Walk make up much of the newer growth.

Same water as Raleigh, different inspectors

Knightdale merged its water and sewer system with Raleigh's, and Raleigh Water now owns and operates every public water and sewer line in town. Water and sewer emergencies go to 919-996-3245. You get the same supply Raleigh does, from Falls Lake and Lake Benson, with soft water (about 25 ppm hardness) and chloramine disinfection outside a roughly six-week chlorine-only stretch each spring. The 2025 report shows no violations and no lead detected at the 90th percentile.

The city's job ends at your property line. The water line from there to the house, and everything inside, is the owner's responsibility.

Inspections are where Knightdale differs from Raleigh. The Town's inspections page says building and trade inspections are done by Wake County Permits and Inspections on the Town's behalf and scheduled through the Wake County Permit Portal. Wake's trade permit application covers water heater change-outs.

What the housing stock means for repairs

About 74% of Knightdale homes were built in 2000 or later, and the median year is 2008. Only around 6% are older than 1980. In practice, that points to plastic supply lines and PVC drains in most houses, so the usual calls are tank water heaters wearing out, toilet fill valves, kitchen clogs, and leaks at fittings or shutoff valves rather than failing old pipe.

A testable backflow assembly on a lawn irrigation system falls under Raleigh's cross-connection program and needs testing every three years by July 1. Most houses simply have a non-testable dual check device in the meter box.

Gas and wells

Gas service in Wake County comes from Enbridge Gas North Carolina, formerly PSNC, where mains reach. If you smell gas, leave first, then call 911 or Enbridge. Outside town, some eastern Wake homes rely on private wells, and the county estimates about one in five sampled wells in that area shows naturally occurring uranium, radon or radium.

Calling for help

Close the main shutoff if water is spreading, then call. You'll be put through to an independent local plumber, and the scheduling and cost are worked out between you and that plumber.
