Plumbing services in Zebulon
The far eastern edge of Wake
Zebulon calls itself "The Town of Friendly People." It's the easternmost town in Wake County, about 18 miles east of Raleigh in a straight line, and parts of it reach into Johnston, Nash and Franklin counties. US 64 and US 264 pass by, NC 96 runs through, and NC 39 leads past Five County Stadium. Incorporated in 1907, Zebulon had 6,903 residents in 2020 and is surrounded by farmland, with the Wakefield area annexed in 1997.
A real mix of house ages
Zebulon's median home dates to 2000, which is older than its neighbors to the west. Roughly 24% of homes are from before 1980, while about 41% have gone up since 2010. Expect two kinds of calls: aging fixtures, drains and supply lines in the Zebulon Historic District and older streets, and water heaters, toilets and fittings in the newer subdivisions.
Water and sewer through Raleigh
Zebulon is one of six Raleigh Water merger communities, with the merger effective in 2006, and it's listed in Raleigh's 2025 water report. The water comes from Falls Lake and Lake Benson, it's soft (about 25 ppm hardness) and chloramine-treated, and the report shows no violations. On the sewer side, Raleigh took over Zebulon's Little Creek treatment plant in October 2006.
Raleigh maintains water lines up to the property line; the owner handles the line from there into the house. Raleigh Water reports it has never found a lead service pipe. Some outlying parts of ZIP 27597 outside Raleigh's lines may be on private wells; no count was found.
Permits and the multi-county wrinkle
For the Wake County part of town, residents apply through the Town of Zebulon and Wake County Permits and Inspections handles permitting and inspections. Wake County doesn't require a permit for a matching water heater replacement in a one- or two-family home when fuel, input, location and venting stay the same. The pieces of Zebulon in Johnston, Nash and Franklin counties weren't covered by the sources we checked, so confirm with the Town if your address is near a county line.
Testable irrigation backflow assemblies are tested every three years by July 1 under Raleigh Water's program.
Gas service
In the Wake County portion, Enbridge Gas North Carolina (formerly PSNC) is the gas utility where lines run. The state's 2014 territory report puts Johnston and Nash counties in Piedmont Natural Gas territory, so a Zebulon address on that side could be Piedmont (emergency line 800-752-7504). Either way, if you smell gas, leave the house and call 911 or your gas utility from outside.
