Middlesex supplies its own water from four town wells and handles water and sewer at Town Hall, which is a different setup from Raleigh. Plumber Raleigh NC is a free referral service, not a plumbing company. Call the number on this page to be connected with a local plumber in Middlesex.

A small Nash County town
Middlesex is a rural town in Nash County, about 24 miles east of Raleigh in a straight line and part of the Rocky Mount metro. Only 912 people lived inside town limits in 2020, though the 27557 ZIP around it holds several thousand more. Town Hall is on S. Nash Street, and the Middlesex Corporate Centre industrial park sits nearby.
Water from the ground, not a lake
Unlike the Wake County towns on Raleigh Water, Middlesex draws all of its water from four town groundwater wells and stores it in a 100,000-gallon tower. Water and sewer questions go to Town Hall at 252-235-5761. The 2025 water quality report is posted on the Town's website; it's a scanned document we couldn't read, so check it yourself for treatment details.
The Town is putting money into the system. A project bid in September 2025 replaces old 2-inch galvanized iron mains with about 9,000 feet of 6-inch PVC, adds eight hydrants and reconnects about 60 services to their meters. Middlesex also received $750,000 in a 2024 state grant round for water and wastewater repairs. If your street is part of that work, a short pressure change or discolored water after a reconnection is worth mentioning when you call.
Sewage is collected by the Town and shipped to Raleigh for treatment. Rural homes out in the ZIP may be on private wells instead; Nash County well testing found manganese above the EPA health advisory in about 29% of tested wells and iron above it in about 21%, which is why staining and filter questions come up out there.
Older houses and no piped gas
The median Middlesex home was built in 1977, and over half are older than 1980, though about 23% have gone up since 2010. Older homes mean more chances of worn supply pipe, tired drain lines and aging shutoff valves.
Heating is another real difference. No homes in ZIP 27557 were counted as heating with utility gas; about 74% use electricity and about 24% propane. Water heaters here are electric or propane. Piedmont Natural Gas holds the Nash County territory on paper, but mains appear to be effectively absent for homes. If you smell propane or gas, leave the house and call 911 or your gas supplier from outside.
Permits and rentals
The Town's Zoning Administrator issues a zoning permit first, and Nash County Planning and Inspections issues building permits. Plumbing is a separate county trade permit pulled by the contractor. Landlords should know the Town requires an inspection of a rental before a new water account is opened, and again at each tenant change.
