About Spring Hope
Spring Hope is a Nash County town about 32 miles east-northeast of Raleigh in a straight line. Its population has held near 1,300 since the 1920s, with 1,309 counted in 2020, and the town center is a National Register historic district that includes the Dr. Hassell Brantley House and the Valentine-Wilder House. Bryantown Road heads out into the county, and the Tar River runs nearby.
Older homes, older plumbing
Spring Hope's median home was built in 1968, and about 61% of its roughly 724 housing units predate 1980. That shapes the work: older galvanized or early copper supply lines, cast iron drains, and fixtures and shutoffs that have seen decades of use. When one old valve is replaced, a plumber will often point out others nearby that are close behind.
Water and sewer are local
The Town of Spring Hope owns its water system, which is fed by town wells rather than a lake. We weren't able to find a posted water quality report, so ask the Town for its latest report if you have questions about what's in your water.
The system has had a rough stretch. Over Christmas 2022, power loss at the town wells and sewer plant, along with a water main break, left the whole town without water, and the mayor pointed to aging infrastructure. In a 2024 state grant round, Spring Hope received $1 million for a new 100,000-gallon water tank and mixers in two existing tanks to improve water quality. If you've had pressure swings or discolored water during town work, mention it when you call so the plumber can rule your own pipes in or out.
Wastewater goes to the Town's own treatment plant, which is permitted to discharge up to 0.4 million gallons a day to the Tar River. Homes out in the rural part of ZIP 27882 may use private wells; we didn't find a count.
Gas, heat and water heaters
Under 2% of homes in ZIP 27882 heat with utility gas, while about 26% use propane and about 68% use electricity. Most water heaters are electric or propane. Piedmont Natural Gas serves Nash County where mains reach. If you smell gas or propane, get out and call 911 or Piedmont at 800-752-7504 from outside.
Permits
Nash County Planning and Inspections issues building permits in the county, with plumbing handled as a separate trade permit and a town zoning permit needed first inside town jurisdiction. We couldn't confirm this from a Spring Hope town page, so it's worth a call to the county before larger jobs.
